The 6 Best Moving Companies in California (2026)
This list is for anyone pricing a real move in California — local, across the state, or out of it. For every company below we pulled the federal FMCSA record, the state license file, the BBB history, and the actual text of Google and Yelp reviews — then scored what we found. The short version: Chipman Relocation & Logistics is our pick for an interstate move, Meathead Movers for a local hourly job, and NorthStar Moving if you want white-glove handling. All six are licensed carriers — not brokers — with active USDOT numbers we link so you can check them yourself.

Our Methodology
Every score on this page comes from primary sources — not from other review sites. Here is exactly what we weighed, and where each number comes from.
Verified reviews
We read the actual review text on Google, Yelp and the BBB — not just the star count — and scored the recurring themes: damage handling, punctuality, billing surprises. Each rating on this page links to the platform it came from.
Licensing & authority
Active USDOT number and motor-carrier (not broker) authority on the FMCSA register, plus the California Cal-T permit for intrastate work — every record linked on the card so you can check it yourself.
Service range
Local, long-distance, international, packing, storage and specialty capability — and whether it is handled in-house or handed off.
Experience
Years in business and depth of California operating history.

California’s Best Movers, Reviewed

Chipman Relocation & Logistics — Best for Interstate Moves
Chipman has been moving California households since 1939 and is still family-owned in its third generation. The practical advantage for a reader is the network: Chipman is an agent for both United Van Lines and Mayflower Transit, so an interstate move is run end-to-end inside one van-line system — one bill of lading, one claims desk — instead of being handed between strangers. The company was named UniGroup’s 2025 Household Goods Member of the Year, and its seven West Coast service centers mean a crew that is actually local on both ends of a California–Pacific Northwest move.
What it costs: Written quote pending — Chipman does not publish rates. For context, a 2–3 bedroom interstate move out of California typically runs $6,500–$14,000; van-line agents sit at the upper half of that range and earn it on long hauls.
What customers say. Google reviewers at the Sacramento branch (~4.6 stars across 208 reviews) repeatedly describe careful packing and on-schedule long-distance delivery. The theme on Yelp is less uniform: the Hayward branch averages ~3.6, with complaints about communication gaps between office and crew.
Sources: Google reviews via branch listings; Yelp branch listings; moveBuddha review aggregation, July 2026.Strengths
- 87 years in business — the deepest track record in the state
- Dual United + Mayflower agency: single-network interstate moves
- Full scope: local, international, corporate, 1M+ sq ft of storage
Keep in mind
- Service quality varies by branch — check the Yelp page for your branch, not just the brand
- Corporate scale: small local moves can find cheaper hourly options
Our take: book Chipman if your move crosses a state line or you want one accountable company door-to-door. Skip it for a small same-city apartment move — you will pay van-line overhead for a job an hourly mover does cheaper.

NOR-CAL Moving Services — Best for Bay Area & Office Moves
NOR-CAL started in 1982 as an office mover and it still shows — this is the strongest commercial-relocation operation on our list, with dedicated crews for labs, server rooms and fine art alongside residential work. As an Allied Van Lines agent it covers interstate and international moves through the Allied network, and its Hayward and San Leandro facilities give it real Bay Area infrastructure rather than a dispatch desk. It is a direct carrier: the crew that loads you is on NOR-CAL’s payroll, not a subcontracted van.
What it costs: Written quote pending. Bay Area local moves typically run $1,200–$3,500 for a 2–3 bedroom home; commercial projects are quoted per scope.
What customers say. The review picture splits by platform. Google runs ~4.5 stars across ~205 reviews, praising organized crews and office projects finished on schedule. Yelp tells a rougher story (~3.0 across ~128 reviews): the recurring complaints are damaged items and claims that took months to resolve — about a quarter of the ~307 reviews we sampled across platforms were negative, with damage-claim handling the dominant theme.
Sources: Google and Yelp listings via moveBuddha and Birdeye aggregates, July 2026; BBB profile (A+, accredited since 2003).Strengths
- Best commercial/office capability on this list — labs, servers, fine art
- Allied network for interstate and international
- 40+ years as a direct Bay Area carrier
Keep in mind
- Yelp sits well below Google — read the recent Yelp reviews before booking
- Damage-claim resolution is the most common complaint theme; document everything and consider full-value protection
Our take: book NOR-CAL for an office relocation or a Bay Area home with specialty items. Skip it if your top priority is a friction-free claims process on a residential move — the complaint pattern is real enough that you should photograph everything and buy the better coverage.

Ace Relocation Systems — Best for Long-Distance Capacity
Ace is the heavy-capacity option in Southern California: family-owned since 1985, roughly 20,000 moves a year across ten U.S. locations, a 700,000 sq ft warehouse network, and one of the largest hauling operations in the Atlas Van Lines system. If your move needs serious logistics — a 5-bedroom home to the East Coast, a corporate relocation with storage-in-transit, a military PCS out of San Diego — Ace has the trucks and the warehouses for it. It also holds an FMC license for ocean freight, so international moves stay in-house.
What it costs: Written quote pending. Interstate moves of a large home from San Diego typically fall in the $14,000–$28,000 band; Ace’s scale usually prices competitively against other van lines on long hauls.
What customers say. Google runs ~4.5 stars across ~202 reviews, with praise for professional long-distance crews. The complaints that do appear are severe rather than frequent: significant damage claims and slow conflict resolution — third-party analyses score its dispute handling low. Note the BBB file: rated A-, not accredited, after one complaint went unanswered — despite the “BBB Accredited A+” badge on the company’s own site.
Sources: Google reviews via Supermove/Birdeye aggregates, July 2026; BBB profile for San Diego HQ.Strengths
- Real long-distance capacity: own fleet, 10 locations, huge warehouse network
- Corporate, military and international moves stay in-house
- ProMover-certified, 40 years family-owned
Keep in mind
- BBB A- and not accredited; their own site overstates this
- When something goes wrong, resolution is reportedly slow — get everything in writing
Our take: book Ace when the job is big — large home, long distance, storage in the middle. Skip it for a small local move, and whatever the size: insist on the written inventory and full-value protection, because dispute handling is its weak spot.

Meathead Movers — Best for Local & Hourly Moves
Meathead built its name on a simple model: hire student-athletes, pay them a wage tied to damage-free work and customer ratings, and have them jog back to the truck when they are not carrying your boxes. It works — the company holds the best-documented rating in this group (~4.8 stars on Google across thousands of reviews) and backs jobs with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. Crews are W-2 employees, not day labor, and the company now covers most of California from eight locations, with storage at its 90,000 sq ft San Luis Obispo facility. Its free moves for domestic-violence survivors are a long-standing program, not a marketing line.
What it costs: Written quote pending. Expect premium hourly pricing — above budget outfits, in line with other top-rated carriers; remember California’s double-drive-time rule applies to hourly bills.
What customers say. The dominant Google theme is hustle: crews that are fast, careful and polite. On Yelp (~4.0–4.1 at the SLO listing, ~350 reviews) the recurring negatives are price — final bills above the phone estimate — and occasional scheduling slips at busy branches.
Sources: Google reviews via Mover Scorecard, April 2026; Yelp San Luis Obispo listing via Apple Maps data; BBB A+, accredited since 2001.Strengths
- Best-documented rating in the group (~4.8 Google, thousands of reviews)
- W-2 athlete crews paid on damage-free performance; 100% satisfaction guarantee
- Statewide coverage with real facilities, not a dispatch desk
Keep in mind
- Premium pricing — get the written Not-to-Exceed number, not a phone range
- In 2025 the company settled an EEOC hiring-practices case (~$2M) without admitting liability — a hiring matter, not move quality, but part of the public record
Our take: book Meathead for a local or intrastate hourly move where crew quality matters most. Skip it if you are shopping strictly on price — and for a cross-country move, take a van-line agent instead.

NorthStar Moving Company — Best for White-Glove & Fragile Moves
NorthStar is the luxury end of this list: a woman-owned Los Angeles mover that built its reputation on entertainment-industry and high-end residential work — custom crating for art and pianos, photo-documented packing, biodiesel trucks, recyclable materials. The service level is not just self-description: Newsweek ranked it the #1 moving company for customer service in 2025, and its Yelp profile (~4.7 stars across ~919 reviews) is one of the strongest in Los Angeles. It handles local, long-distance and international moves under its own authority, with an FMC license for ocean shipments.
What it costs: Written quote pending. White-glove means premium: expect to pay above standard carriers, especially for crating and full packing. The FMCSA record shows a small fleet (11 power units), so book early in peak season.
What customers say. The recurring Yelp theme is care with difficult items — pianos, art, antiques arriving without a scratch — and estimators who show up on time. The negative minority cites premium pricing and, on long-distance jobs, delivery windows that stretched.
Sources: Yelp Chatsworth listing (~4.7, 919 reviews) via moveBuddha, July 2026; BBB A+, accredited since 1995.Strengths
- Newsweek’s #1 mover for customer service (2025)
- Real specialty capability: custom crating, art, pianos, photo-documented packing
- Woman-owned, 30+ years, consistently strong Yelp
Keep in mind
- Premium pricing — you are paying for handling, not mileage
- Small registered fleet; interstate capacity is thinner than the van-line agents’
Our take: book NorthStar when what you are moving is fragile, valuable, or both — this is the crew for a piano and a crate of art. Skip it for a budget apartment move or a max-capacity cross-country haul.

Pure Moving Company — Best-Reviewed Mover in California
Pure is the youngest company on this list and, by raw review volume, the most striking: a 5.0 average on Google in Los Angeles across roughly 3,000 reviews and ~4.9 on Yelp in San Francisco across 700+. The model is transparent flat hourly pricing — packing, disassembly and reassembly included in the rate — with a written price guarantee. Its FMCSA file shows zero complaints. For a local or regional move in SF, LA or Orange County, the review record says customers walk away happy at an unusually consistent rate.
What it costs: Written quote pending. Pure advertises flat hourly rates with packing included — confirm whether travel time is billed on top, and get the Not-to-Exceed number in writing.
What customers say. The dominant theme across both platforms is honesty about money: final bills matching the quote, no surprise fees. The smaller negative thread is about long-distance scheduling — delivery spread over days on consolidated runs — and the occasional damaged item on larger jobs.
Sources: Google LA listing via Mover Scorecard, April 2026; Yelp SF listing; BBB profile (standing varies by metro — check your branch).Strengths
- Exceptional review profile: 5.0 Google LA, ~4.9 Yelp SF, thousands of reviews
- Flat guaranteed pricing — the recurring praise is “no hidden fees”
- Zero FMCSA complaints on record
Keep in mind
- Young company (2014) — a shorter track record than anyone else here
- The FMCSA registration shows 1 power unit and 4 drivers against a claimed ~5,000 moves a year — ask how your move is staffed and insured before booking
Our take: book Pure for a local SF/LA move if you want the crowd’s favorite at a predictable price. Skip it for a complex interstate relocation until you are satisfied with their answers on fleet, staffing and delivery windows.
What My Own California Moves Taught Me

The things that surprise people on moving day — and what to do about each.
Double drive time is real. California law lets movers bill twice the actual drive time between your old and new address on hourly moves. It is legal statewide — but it must appear in your written estimate, not materialize on the bill.
You are owed a Not-to-Exceed price. On intrastate household moves, California requires a written estimate with a price cap. If a mover will not put one in writing after seeing your inventory, that is your answer — choose another mover.
Parking permits are on you, not the mover. San Francisco requires temporary no-parking signs (SFMTA, apply days ahead) for a moving truck on most streets; Los Angeles has an equivalent through LADOT. Skip it and you pay for a long carry — in time and money.
High-rises run on certificates. Most managed buildings in SF and LA want a certificate of insurance (COI) from the mover and a reserved service elevator — often with weekday-only windows. Book the elevator when you book the mover, not the week of.
Season moves the price. May through September and the last week of every month are peak: rates run 10–20% higher and good crews sell out. A mid-month, mid-week move in October is the cheapest slot on the calendar.
Interstate means a window, not a date. Unless you pay for a dedicated truck, your goods share a trailer — expect a delivery window of roughly 7–21 days leaving California, longer to the East Coast. Get the window in writing and keep essentials with you.
california-moving-street.webp · 1600×700How Much Does a California Move Cost?
Statewide ranges by home size — your written Not-to-Exceed quote is the only number that counts.
| Home size | Local move | Intrastate (e.g. LA ↔ SF) | California ↔ Out of state |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio / 1 bedroom | $450 – $1,300 | $1,800 – $3,500 | $3,000 – $6,500 |
| 2 – 3 bedrooms | $1,200 – $3,500 | $3,500 – $7,000 | $6,500 – $14,000 |
| 4+ bedrooms | $3,500 – $7,000 | $7,000 – $14,000 | $14,000 – $28,000 |
Ranges reflect typical written estimates for these scenarios; hourly local bills include legally mandated double drive time, and intrastate pricing follows state maximum-rate rules. Per-company written quotes: being collected — column fills in as they arrive. How we estimate these ranges →

Every mover on this page is a verified carrier. If you shop beyond it, this is the checklist that matters.
Check the Cal-T permit on the state license search and the USDOT on FMCSA before anything else — unlicensed “movers” advertising on marketplaces are California’s most common moving scam.
Refuse large upfront cash deposits. Reputable movers bill on delivery; a big deposit is how a hostage load starts.
A quote far below three written estimates is not a deal — it is the setup for a weight bump and a ransom demand at delivery.
Know the 110% rule: on a non-binding interstate estimate, the mover cannot demand more than 110% of the estimate at delivery — the rest is billed later. Anything more, demanded on the spot, is illegal.
Interstate movers must hand you FMCSA’s “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move” booklet and offer neutral arbitration for disputes. If they do not know what you mean, walk away.
File problems with the FMCSA’s National Consumer Complaint Database — a complaint on file follows the company’s USDOT record permanently.
